Here is an excerpt from the book:
Candles illumined above floor in the chandeliers. Diamond colored clear jewels refracted against the pastel colors roaming below. Countless men and women took hand by hand dancing in unison as the orchestra played. Champagne and wine poured into glasses as some couples stood off to the side watching others. Smiles and kissable lips flirted with one another as the waltz continued moving. Lavish dresses and suits complemented one another as the persuasive colors danced with one another on the open dance floors. Some elderly men stood off to the side scratching their mustaches and gossiped amongst each other. Some women stood off to the side giggling to one another looking at the bachelors of high society talking to one another. Many of their eyes meet and some men take their hands guiding them to the dance floor. Luella promenaded into the room with a tight pearl jeweled bodice, full skirt, low cut V-shaped sheer off the shoulder cream with deep cherry trim. The dress dragged against the floor with a subtle train. She held up a fan fanning herself covering her mouth watching the others watch her.
Her rogue lips, dark hair stood out in its up do rimmed with pearls and a delicate sea of pearl necklace choker. Her golden pearl ring sparkled against the light. Others moved as they watched her. She walked over to the other eligible women talking to one another. Luella pulled the fan from her face and surveyed the two women with onyx dresses with a white trim. Their eyes looked over at her. The one on the left wore her to the side bun and a dropping necklace. Her black hair, pale skin and green eyes watched Luella with distaste. The one of the right sneered at Luella and her cruel brown eyes spoke unspoken hate. Her pink lips and alabaster skin took her gloved hand and rolled her eyes at Luella.
“Luella, you came tonight?” the one on the left said.
Luella scowled at her and glanced at her, “Florence, how do you do?”
Florence looked scorned at Luella for deflecting her question, “Luella, please tell us why would a colored woman be invited to these kinds of events?”
Luella moved the fan to cover her lips once more. “Florence, money would be one thing, that I have as my father, Lon Blair is the CEO and Chairman of Blair Investments. I believe I am entitled despite what you may think.”
The other one on the right turned to Luella with a fake smile. “Luella, your father may be the wealthiest, but then again he doesn’t own everything in this town. You would be considered a child of the unseen. No one really cares to see the child out of disastrous union to appear silently here.”
