Here is a short except from the book:
Kenji opened the door softly on the side and peered up to see inside. Darkness illuminated in room as a gentle light of vibrant colors christened in the dark. A small cage with a scaly creature with rainbow wings fluttering about and ice flaming out of the small creature’s eyes. The long smooth scales adored the body of the fairy hybrid dragon. The green and violet colors entranced the room with a jingle flustering the sight. Kenji moved closer and peeked down at the cage. The fairy dragon glanced up at the man who had entered in the room and flew back to the corner of her cage. She was afraid as he pulled off the darkened cover over the cage. Kenji smiled then wiped his eyes trying to make sense of what he saw. He couldn’t believe his eyes as he was looking at a fairy. Kenji shook his head trying to make sense of the situation.
“I hope this will keep me in the game now,” Kenji said out loud.
He picked cage without thinking and stumbled forward then picking up the cover placing it over it. Kenji grinned to himself then walked back into the room. Dai looked at the cage in his hand. Kenji placed it on the table.
“What is this?” Dai asked hesitant of what he was about look at.
Kenji drunkenly staggered to the table and placed it on it smirking, “something unknown and seen by anyone.”
Dai nodded to the drunken man who seemed out of sorts. Kenji sat down and gazed at his hand. Several more minutes passed and each man had took on more cards eagerly determined to outdo one another. Kenji glanced over at the man who seemed to not blow a sweat on anything. Kenji placed down his cards feeling he had won but Dai placed his cards down beating Kenji out. Dai chuckled and glanced up at Kenji waiting for him to fold on his bet.
“I believe that I won and I will claim my payment,” Dai said looking over at the cage.
Kenji frowned openly then slammed his hands on the table, “that is not right. How did you win? I believe that you cheated!”
“No need to be a sore loser in the game, Kenji. There is plenty of wins in the future, but this time, I won,” Dai said slowly as he rose from the table.
An unspoken fire of cider and ash melted in Dai’s eyes as he peeked at the gamble before him, “it would be in your best interest to let me claim my prize and leave.”
Kenji stood back frightened for he had never seen this kind of look in the man before. He was insecurely of what this could lead. Even through his drunken stupor, he knew he didn’t want to get mugged or beaten up in his place. He wanted to live for the next day. A waiter came by Kenji and set down a sake on the table. Kenji quickly took sake and drank it. He surveyed over at Dai then back to the cage.
He didn’t know why he was going to bargain something that was dead to the family in many ways. Kenji bowed his head and got up to walk away from the table. Dai watched Kenji leave and looked down at the money on the table. He sighed and placed a bag on the table. Dai unzipped it then started to put the money in it. He slowly reached out and picked up the cage feeling an electric shock pull toward him. Dai peeked through the covers to see fairy dragon shimmering a little then looking up at her new owner.
“Don’t be afraid little one, for I am Dai. There is a place I will take you to,” he said slowly.
Her eyes turned crimson green then poofed in a shimmer of sparkles. Dai put the cover back over it and picked up. He walked out of the room holding the cage and bag of money. Dai smirked wickedly for his plan was coming all too well with he had in place.
